Workforce Readiness with Westside High School
Thanks to the generous support of the PSE&G Foundation, a private family foundation, and strategic partnership with the City of Newark, University Hospital and its Foundation have launched an impactful Workforce Readiness Program aimed at preparing local students for careers in healthcare. The program, which began at West Side High School in July 2024, is designed to expose high school students to various hospital roles and responsibilities, ultimately providing them a pathway toward permanent positions at UH upon graduation.
The inaugural cohort consists of 10 sophomores from West Side High School. Over three years, students will engage in paid internships, gaining insights into various hospital departments and developing essential professional skills. The program includes rotations through different hospital sectors, focused mentorship, and life-skills training.
Throughout the program, students receive training in both professional and life skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the workforce. The first year provides a broad introduction to hospital operations, coupled with mini-capstone projects. As students progress, they will focus on specific areas of interest, culminating in a senior-year internship where they complete a comprehensive project reflecting their learning journey.
Philanthropic support plays a crucial role in sustaining the program and continuing to provide compensation, transportation, and nourishment for participating students. This financial backing not only encourages students to fully engage in the program but also reinforces UH’s commitment to fostering local talent and building a strong, community-focused healthcare workforce.
