Toast & Tribute raises $185,000, UHF Honors Cardiac Care Team

NEWARK, NJ: University Hospital Foundation raised $185,000 to support the work of University Hospital’s Cardiac Care team during the 4th annual Toast & Tribute event held at The Highlawn in West Orange on April 10th. Led by Drs. Justin Sambol and Alfonso Waller, this award-winning team not only leads in innovation and excellence but also embodies true compassion, ensuring every patient receives the highest level of care with dignity and heart.

Expert heart care has never been more important. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in New Jersey, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds, and, in Newark, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, and stroke rates far exceed national averages.  University Hospital’s cardiac team is at the forefront, delivering advanced, evidence-based care —from managing hypertension, heart disease, and heart rhythm disorders to performing complex bypass and valve surgeries using the latest minimally-invasive techniques.

“University Hospital Foundation is proud to champion the work of our exceptional clinicians. The Cardiac Care Team stands out—not only for their expertise and the deep respect of their peers, but also for the lasting impact they have on their patients,” said Jessica Backofen, Chief Development Officer. “I am grateful to our Board of Trustees for their shared vision to making a real difference in the lives of patients who come to University Hospital from both near and far.”

Since 2022, Toast & Tribute has raised funds for critical University Hospital initiatives including patient assistance programs and free breast cancer screenings for uninsured women.

“The Foundation’s work to amplify University Hospital’s impact on the community remains deeply important,” said Calvin Ledford, Jr., Chair of University Hospital Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “The commitment and passion of physicians like the Cardiac Care team and Foundation supporters is helping to support groundbreaking programs, innovative research, and provide equitable, compassionate care to those who need it most.”

University Hospital Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to its Board of Trustees, event sponsors, and the many supporters who help power its mission by donating and attending events like Toast & Tribute and the annual Golf Classic. Toast & Tribute’s top sponsors this year included Health Advocates Network, PSE&G, and Pulse Medical Transportation. Many other organizations and individuals contributed their time, effort, and funds to make the event a success.
