See, Test & Treat Provides Cancer Screenings for Uninsured Women
Essex County has one of the highest incidence rates of cervical cancer in the country and over 30% of University Hospital breast cancer cases are diagnosed in advanced stages. Thousands of Newark residents do not get screened because of inadequate insurance. To reduce these rates and improve outcomes, University Hospital hosts an annual program called See, Test, & Treat. The program holds free cancer screening for uninsured and underinsured patients. See, Test & Treat brings the power of diagnostic medicine to medically underserved populations through free cancer screening and a focus on health education.
University Hospital and its Foundation held its See, Test & Treat event this past October with over 300 attendees. On that day, women received a pelvic and clinical breast exam, a Pap test with same-day results, a screening mammogram with same-day or prompt results, connection to follow-up care, interpretive services, impactful health education, and translated educational materials to take home.
This life-saving initiative demonstrates University Hospital’s unwavering commitment to addressing health disparities and ensuring equitable access to care for all. Through the support of partners like Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and the College of American Pathologists Foundation, the See, Test & Treat program not only provides critical cancer screenings but also empowers women with knowledge and resources to take charge of their health. Together, we’re making strides toward a healthier, more equitable future for Newark and beyond.
