A Story of Hope and Healing

For Aiesha Hyman, University Hospital will always hold a special place in her heart.

At 17 years old, Aiesha was a high school senior preparing to become a mother when a routine stress test quickly turned into a medical emergency. Alone and frightened, she learned that she would need an emergency C-section. With no family members available to be by her side, Aiesha faced one of the most overwhelming moments of her life.

As she recalls, Dr. Gittens explained that there was no time to wait and that the procedure needed to begin immediately to protect both Aiesha and her baby. Surrounded by Dr. Gittens and her care team, Aiesha placed her trust in them as they prepared for the emergency delivery. By the time a friend was able to arrive at the hospital, her baby was nearly born.

“Dr. Gittens holds a very special place in my heart,” Aiesha said. “I will never forget the care, compassion, and reassurance she provided me during that experience. Her presence truly made all the difference.”

Years later, Aiesha returned to University Hospital in a new role. Today, she serves as Program Coordinator, EHR Implementation & Maintenance in the Office of the CMO/CMIO. Being part of the organization that cared for her during such a pivotal moment has made her connection to the hospital even more meaningful.

“Today, as an employee of University Hospital, it means even more to be part of the same institution where I experienced such exceptional care,” she said. “I am forever grateful for the role Dr. Gittens played in one of the most important moments of my life and for the lasting impact she continues to have on so many families.”

Aiesha’s story reflects the lasting impact of compassionate care. What began as one of the most challenging moments of her life has become a lifelong connection to University Hospital. Today, she is proud to contribute to the mission of the same institution that supported her when she needed it most—a place she will always be grateful to call her own.
