Joseph L. Muscarelle, Jr.

Joseph L. Muscarelle, Jr. is the Chairman of Jos. L. Muscarelle, Inc. based in Maywood, New Jersey, one of the largest regional owner/operators of commercial real estate in the State.  With 90 years of history, the Muscarelle companies have developed, owned and managed many of the finest projects worth billions of dollars including hotels, office, industrial, and multifamily properties some of which is held with ownership today in five U.S. States.  Now retired he stays active and involved in some of the real estate assets as well as some of his own personal holdings.

Mr. Muscarelle’s professional career began at the firm, which was started by his father, Joseph L. Muscarelle, Sr.  Except for two years of military service, Mr. Muscarelle’s entire career has been at this firm, starting from the early age of 14, where he worked during the summer on various construction projects, up until graduation from Lehigh University in 1958, when he started working full-time.  He started as a civil engineer, then as an assistant superintendent, and then as a superintendent.

In 1971, he was made President of Jos. L. Muscarelle, Inc. after completing eight years in the various company departments of accounting, estimating and project management and completing a management education program at Harvard.  During this time, he became active in the local and State Building Contractors Association, becoming the State Association’s youngest president in 1976 and elected by the members of the State Association as a National Director of the Association of General Contractors of America and was given its Life Directorship.  He has also been active in many other civic and charitable organizations, having been elected to the local school board twice, becoming its Vice President in his second term.  Following six years of service at the school board, he was elected to the local council for two
3-year terms.  He was also a Director of the National Community Bank, a publicly traded company until it was sold to Bank of New York and a member of its Loan Committee.

Along with his business and various civic involvements, he served on the Chamber of Commerce, United Way and County Boy and Girl Scout Councils.  He was appointed to the Associate Board of Directors of People’s Trust Bank (now Bank of America), leaving this Board after his election to the Board of Directors of National Community Bank.

Today, Mr. Muscarelle continues his civic and charitable involvement and has established medical, dental and osteopathic student scholarships in his name, endowed the Chair of the NJ Medical School Dean, Rutgers (Newark) and serves on its Advisory Board. He is a member of the NJH Foundation, a public charity and also provides capital for medical advancements and research.  He was a member of the Finance Council of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, NJ and does volunteer work at two hospitals in Florida and had volunteered at HUMC for 8 years.  He has served on several study commissions appointed by the Governor of New Jersey. For relaxation he enjoys playing golf and traveling. He and his wife have donated money to expand the Muscarelle Museum at William & Mary, VA., originally donated by his parents in 1985.

Mr. Muscarelle was educated in public, parochial and private schools and graduated from Lawrenceville Prep School in 1954 and Lehigh University in 1958 where he earned his degree in Finance with a minor in Civil Engineering.  In 1970, Mr. Muscarelle completed a 15-week Program for Management Development at Harvard University.  He was married in 1959 to the former Sharon McDonnell. Married for 56 years, he and his wife have 5 children – 3 boys and 2 girls who have presented them with 10 grandchildren ages 20 years to 9.
